Successful Northern Ontario Walleye Fishing

By Nancy Gardner

There are several scenarios of walleye fishing. Some individuals go for numbers while others go for the sizes. Others feel happier when they find hotspots at rocky points or off the shoal. Here they get to catch small walleyes. Catching one after another in Northern Ontario walleye fishing seems boring. You will not have a large catch before your trip is over.

During the spring, they choose to stay where there is a river current or closer to the shore. You can find them three to ten feet from the shores. In Canadian lakes, the fish that do not spawn in river do so at the shores. By the end of the fishing season, most of them are through with spawning. They will however hang around the places to protect the beds.

Once you have mounted the light jigs, be fast to catch them in the shores. Be aggressive to retrieve them because the fish are also aggressive this time. You will get better catch if you use bright colors such as chartreuse, yellow, red and white. Some of them will come there to feed. Others will be there because of bright colors. These colors tend to aggravate them. Most like white.

At daytime and during early spring, those fishing will likely have a large catch of younger fish. They get them easily at the beds. During these periods, big females are usually at the deeper portions. Those who are after hunting larger sizes should go fishing in places where the fish do not spawn. That is in deeper sections. These big fish prefer deep parts.

You also need to have awareness of special spots where you can find fish in large numbers. If you go fishing in the spring, remember to wear original and small Rapala. You then will slowly troll along shore lines. The fish are present at about four feet inside the waters. Remember that the best spring colors are red, chartreuse, blue and fire tiger.

If you will keep on trolling past a certain spot and hit them, then you should know that many of them are there. In that case, you can stop your boat and begin casing. Avoid trolling back and forth severally because this spooks the area and stops them from feeding. They will disappear from these points.

If you are that stubborn fisherman who is not ready to try anything new then you will not appreciate fishing in the north. You will believe that the south has better catch. The fishermen ought to know that during early spring; ninety five percent of these fish are shallower in the waters. During afternoons, the bigger females move deeper in order to protect themselves from the pikes and the scorching sun.

They will go deeper during summer and also stay at the river mouths or the layoff points in the rocks. The rock drop offs are good also. If a lake has flat structures, then they will prefer to stay in the thick weeds where they get better protection from the scorching sun.
